A showcase of crafts for interiors, brought to life with daily demonstrations in the Design Avenue
Bringing together nine selected makers from QEST (the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust) and Cockpit, Craftmakers in Residence is an exciting opportunity to witness artisans in action and gain a deeper understanding of how one-of-a-kind designs are made. Meet them in person and see their incredible work up close, from embroidery and hand painting to mosaic, woodworking and letter carving.
Transforming an idea into reality takes skill, imagination and vision; from revitalising heritage techniques and cutting-edge innovation to seeing the potential of materials and artisan processes.
QEST MAKERS
Artist Hannah Griffiths has a painterly approach to mosaics, and for Craftmakers in Residence she will be working on a series of Mosaic Bird plates; each bird will be meticulously handmade from cut glass and ceramic tiles. Rosanna Bishop specialises in bespoke silk-screen printing and hand painting; she will be transforming a leather chair specially for the event. Letter carver, typographer, sculptor and glass engraver Wayne Hart will be carving and gilding letters on a variety of stones and pebbles. Woodworker Florence Hamer uses local sourced British timber to create functional pieces of wooden ware. She will be turning greenwood bowls on a pole lathe and hand carving bowls and spoons, while artist and surface pattern designer Bethan Wyn Williams will take inspiration from her native rural north Wales to create intricately detailed repeating patterns.
QEST (the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust) is the charity that supports the training and education of talented and aspiring craftspeople through scholarship and apprenticeship funding, sustaining vital skills in traditional and contemporary crafts and supporting Britain’s cultural heritage.
COCKPIT MAKERS
Four makers in residence at Cockpit will demonstrate their remarkable skills. They include Karen Henriksen, who will be using her millinery skills to create handcrafted lampshades, and Kamilah Ahmed whose embroidered and hand wrapped textiles merge digital processes with heritage craft techniques. She will draw on her experiences working with fashion brands such as Christian Dior, McQueen and Valentino. Hannah Galvin Horne is an artist specialising in decorative leather surfaces, reinventing historic processes used in bookbinding and illuminated manuscripts in a contemporary context. Breathing new life into materials destined for landfill, Alicia Rowbotham reimagines by-products from the UK textile manufacturing industry to create objects, including wall pieces for today’s spaces.
Cockpit is a centre for excellence in craft, bridging the gap between talent and opportunity. An award-winning social enterprise, Cockpit is home to 160 independent creative businesses in London.
Take a tour of the show and meet the makers. Hear their stories, see how their one-of-a-kind pieces are created, and discover ways in which they take their chosen material or artisan process to new heights.
This free tour is aimed at designers, collectors, students and all craft enthusiasts. As a champion of design and craft, and a highly visible platform for new work, the Design Centre is proud to give support to remarkable talent.
